Works of Mercy

Tonight Ray is out to dinner and a movie with a friend who recently had a stroke.  This friend is someone he used to see quite regularly at one of his previous jobs, but lost touch after time. Upon hearing that his friend had a stroke, he got his contact info and visited him right away.  Their friendship seems to have picked up right where it left off.  This makes me very happy for Ray.

In some ways, I guess going to see his friend would be considered a work of mercy, visit the sick. Although I know Ray didn't look at it that way- he just wanted to reach out to an old friend who was sick.  Sometimes Ray surprises me by doing things like that.  He has given money to friends who have needed help financially; he made a huge impression on the kids when he helped a man who had an accident and basically saved his life by getting help and staying with him; he made another huge impression on the kids when he helped to take care of a man who ended up in our driveway disoriented and needing medical help. He ended up taking the man to the hospital.  He also helped others by giving them extra Christmas gifts when he knew things were particularly tough for them.  He just does it, often not thinking, but doing. It's not like we have a lot of extra money or that he goes looking for people to help, he just does it when it's needed.  I really love that about him.  He is a good man.  He does really try to help his fellow neighbor.
